Our Travel Radio show Wish You Were Queer is back with your host Jamie Greaves, with a bit of a Steps special as he was lucky enough to see their spectacular show in Brighton and can’t wait to give us his feedback!
In our Top and Bottom feature, we put together information from across the globe relating to where is good to travel as a member of the LGBTQ+ community and where is not so good. In Bottom, we had Oklahoma, Egypt, Texas, for their poor and controversial LGBTQ+ legislation and practices.
But it’s not all bad. On Top, we have Lewis Hamilton, honouring the LGBT community at the Qatar Grand Prix. Scotland ranks highly on Top as the first county in the world to embed LGBTQ+ education into the school curriculum! And we also included Argentina with some good news about their gender identity laws.
In the Hotseat, we had Gavin Bryce, an experienced management consultant. He is also a longstanding HIV advocate. Gavin is currently supporting Scotland’s national HIV charity, and he has also worked with some of the world’s best known international charities. In the interview, Gavin tells us about the places he likes to travel as a gay man, including Africa and interestingly, the areas that have a disconnect in laws compared to their social norms.
Gavin talks about staying safe as a gay traveller, including all the things you have to think about when heading off abroad, including a shift in your human rights when visiting different destinations. Jamie and Gavin also discuss how you can find out where in the world is it a criminal offence to be an LGBT person and how often different state laws differ from the country they are in, sometimes allowing the ability to discriminate against LGBT people.
Gavin also gives his advice on what should people do if they plan to travel for long periods of time in an area that wouldn’t necessarily be their choice, for example, for work, and this also includes information on how to safely manage your social media.
