Disney AR

At The Business Creative, we love nothing more than cutting edge technology being used in innovative and entertaining ways and that’s why, with that in mind, we’re really excited to hear that Disney is launching a brand new augmented reality experience called Disney Unchartered Adventure, aboard the Disney Wish Cruise Ship, which sets sail in Summer 2022.

What really excites us about this concept is that it appears to go way beyond the standard use of Augmented Reality, using both AR and physical effects to immerse Disney Wish guests completely into the storytelling. In fact, Disney go as far as to say that this is a Heads Up experience (rather than heads down) to be played with family and friends, using their devices (or spy glasses, as Disney likes to call them) merely as a tool that brings the ship to life, opening portals into new worlds and allowing guests to interact with them.

Captain Minnie welcomes guests on board with the aim of the game to hunt for the missing wishing star! Guests will solve puzzles, conquer quests and ‘save the day’. There are four different quests on board the ship designed around Peter Pan, Moana, Princess and the Frog, and Finding Nemo themes. Guests are directed to a sign or object on board, which will come to life via their mobile device which in turn unlocks both an interactive experience and gameplay, where family and friends can work together to accomplish tasks that lead to finding the missing piece of the star.

The adventure wraps up with a scheduled finale towards the end of the cruise with a live host and interactive media on screen. Participants will come together for a final battle with a well-known maritime Disney villain to restore the wishing star.

We all know that even some of the best AR concepts can unwittingly turn out to be a solitary experience. We absolutely love the way Disney is planning to capitalise on the magic of Augmented Reality technology, but without losing sight of the customer experience. This adventure is focussed on family interaction, game play and guests sharing the magic of Disney by cleverly combining the physical world and augmented reality.
